2017 Wales School Debating Championships

2017 Wales School Debating Championships

Sponsored by Hodge Bank, our annual tournament takes place from October to November and is open to every secondary school and college in Wales. Over 60 teams participate each year.

This competition is open to all students in Wales aged 14-18. Each secondary school/college can enter one team of 2 speakers.

Rounds take place from 11 to 25 October 2017. The initial stage of the competition is divided into 8 regional rounds (with one winning team selected from each region), which are followed by national quarter-finals and semi-finals in Newtown, and the Final in Cardiff.

Topics for the debates, which take place in English, and guidance information are sent to competitors in September, along with a copy of our Debating Cue Cards. Schools can choose any round to enter into, but rounds are strictly limited to 10 teams. If your first choice round is full, please choose another location from the options available. We have tried to ensure more than one convenient location for each region wherever possible.

If you’re new to the competition, don’t worry! We also organise Debate Training Days to help students understand what is required. They include the following elements:

  • Demonstration debate with question-and-answer session
  • Workshops on Style, Content and Strategy (the three categories of assessment at the Wales Championships)
  • Guidance on effective preparation for debates
  • Short practice debates with feedback from experienced debaters
